Exam notes built from the trend of nine official IGNOU papers. Topics are ordered by how often they were asked, and each one gives the core argument, the thinkers to cite and a 20-mark answer frame.
Papers analysed: June 2022, December 2022, June 2023, December 2023, June 2024, December 2024, June 2025, December 2025, June 2026 (9 papers)
Every one of the nine papers had the same frame: 3 hours, 100 marks, two sections of five questions, attempt any five with at least two from each section, about 500 words per answer. In six of the nine papers, question 10 was a short-notes question (any two of three, 10 marks each).
Section I usually tests the philosophy and theory of research: positivism, phenomenology, functional and evolutionary theory, feminist method. Section II usually tests techniques: sampling, survey, interview, ethnography, ICT and statistics. This is a tendency, not a rule; survey method appeared in Section I in June 2025.

"Note" means it was asked as a 10-mark short note. Counts are papers, not questions. The appendix lists every question by session.
Study plan / अध्ययन योजना: Master topics 1–12. In each of the nine papers, these twelve topics offered at least five questions you could attempt while keeping two per section. Topics 13–19 are the short-note pool and your backup.
7 of 9 papers. Typical forms: what is survey research, its steps; merits and demerits; why a researcher uses it; short note on sample survey.
Meaning. A social survey collects standardised information from a defined population, usually a sample, through questionnaires or interview schedules, so that patterns can be measured and generalised. It answers "how many", "how often" and "what is associated with what". The modern survey grew out of 19th-century poverty studies, such as Charles Booth's study of London and Seebohm Rowntree's study of York (1901), and today runs from the Census (a full enumeration) to sample surveys such as the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) in India.
Types. Descriptive surveys map a situation (literacy, voting, health); analytical or explanatory surveys test relations between variables. Cross-sectional surveys collect data at one point; longitudinal surveys (panel, trend, cohort) follow change over time.
Steps. (1) Define the problem and objectives; (2) review literature and frame hypotheses; (3) define the population, unit and sampling frame; (4) choose the sampling design and size; (5) prepare the tool, a questionnaire or schedule, and operationalise concepts into indicators; (6) pre-test or pilot the tool; (7) collect data through trained investigators; (8) edit, code and tabulate; (9) analyse and interpret; (10) write the report.
Merits. It covers large populations at reasonable cost, produces quantifiable and comparable data, allows statistical generalisation, and can be replicated. Demerits. It captures what people say, not always what they do; it can be superficial on meaning and context; it suffers from non-response, interviewer bias and badly worded questions; and it fixes categories in advance, so it can miss the unexpected.
7 of 9 papers. Typical forms: what is research and its types; significance of scientific social research; qualitative vs quantitative; exploratory vs experimental; descriptive vs analytical; participatory research.
Meaning and significance. Social research is the systematic, self-critical investigation of social life to describe, explain or understand it. It replaces opinion with evidence, tests theory, informs policy (for example, poverty lines and reservation debates rely on survey data) and gives a voice to groups who are otherwise unheard.
Main classifications.
Qualitative vs quantitative.
Today most researchers combine both (mixed methods), and triangulation is the usual justification.
6 of 9 papers. Typical forms: premises of evolutionary theory; premises of functional theory; critiques of functional theories; compare and contrast the two; critically analyse both.
Evolutionary theory: premises. Society changes through a fixed sequence of stages from simple to complex, much like organisms evolve. Change is gradual, directional and progressive, and all societies pass through the same stages (unilinear). Key thinkers: Auguste Comte (law of three stages: theological, metaphysical, positive); Herbert Spencer (from simple to compound societies, from militant to industrial; growth brings structural differentiation); Lewis Henry Morgan in Ancient Society (1877): savagery, barbarism, civilisation; E. B. Tylor on the evolution of culture and religion.
Critique of evolutionism. It is ethnocentric, treating Western society as the end point; it is "conjectural history", built without real historical evidence; it ignores diffusion and borrowing between cultures; and it cannot explain why some societies "skip" stages. Later neo-evolutionists (Leslie White, Julian Steward's multilinear evolution) answered some of this.
Functional theory: premises. Society is a system of interdependent parts; each part (institution, practice) has a function, a contribution to the maintenance of the whole; the system tends towards equilibrium; shared values integrate it. Key thinkers: Émile Durkheim (social facts are explained by the function they serve, separately from their cause); Bronisław Malinowski (culture meets basic biological and derived needs); A. R. Radcliffe-Brown (function maintains the social structure); Talcott Parsons (AGIL); Robert K. Merton.
Critiques of functionalism. (1) Teleology: it explains a thing by its effect. (2) Tautology: whatever exists is assumed to be functional. (3) Conservatism: it justifies the status quo and inequality. (4) Neglect of conflict, power and change. (5) It treats individuals as passive. Merton's reply: he separated manifest functions (intended, recognised) from latent functions (unintended), introduced dysfunction and functional alternatives, rejected the postulates of functional unity, universal functionalism and indispensability, and called for theories of the middle range.
Comparison. Evolutionism is diachronic and historical (how society changes over time); functionalism is synchronic (how society works at one moment). Both use the organic analogy and both share positivist assumptions; Spencer links the two.
6 of 9 papers. Typical forms: importance of theory in sociology; basic elements of theory; use and scope of theory in research; elements of research methodology; short note on methodology and method.
What a theory is. A theory is a set of logically connected propositions that explains a class of social phenomena. Its elements are: concepts (abstract terms such as "alienation" or "status"), variables (concepts that can take different values), propositions or statements of relation, assumptions, and the hypotheses derived from them. Theories differ in scope: grand theory (Parsons) versus Merton's theories of the middle range, which are close enough to data to be tested.
Why theory matters in research. It (1) points to the problem worth studying; (2) defines and links concepts; (3) generates testable hypotheses; (4) tells the researcher which facts are relevant; (5) helps interpret findings and connect them to existing knowledge. Facts without theory are a heap; theory without facts is speculation. Walter Wallace's "wheel of science" (1971) shows the cycle: theory → hypotheses → observation → empirical generalisation → theory.
Deduction and induction. Deductive research moves from theory to hypothesis to test (typical of surveys). Inductive research builds theory from data; Glaser and Strauss's grounded theory (1967) is the classic case.
Methodology vs method. Methodology is the logic and philosophy of inquiry: what counts as knowledge (epistemology), what the social world is (ontology), and which approach suits the problem. A method is a concrete technique for collecting or analysing data (interview, survey, observation). Methodology justifies the choice of methods.
Elements of research methodology. Selection and formulation of the problem; review of literature; conceptual framework and hypotheses; research design; universe and sampling; tools and techniques of data collection; analysis and interpretation; report writing; ethical considerations throughout.
6 of 9 papers. Typical forms: what is the interview method and its types; short note on interview; what is a questionnaire and how is it constructed.
Interview. A purposeful conversation in which the researcher collects information through direct verbal interaction. Types: by structure, structured (fixed questions and order, like a schedule), semi-structured (interview guide with freedom to probe) and unstructured or in-depth (open conversation); by purpose, focused interview (Merton and Kendall, 1946: on a specific experience), clinical, life-history and key-informant interviews; by number, individual and group or focus-group interviews; by medium, face-to-face, telephone and online.
Process and skills. Preparation (objectives, guide, appointment) → building rapport → asking and probing without leading → recording (notes, audio with consent) → closing. The interviewer must stay neutral and avoid influencing answers.
Merits and limits. Interviews give depth, flexibility, access to non-literate respondents and the chance to observe non-verbal cues. They are costly and time-consuming, open to interviewer bias and social-desirability bias, and hard to compare when unstructured.
Questionnaire. A written set of questions that respondents fill in themselves (mailed, handed over or online). A schedule is similar but is filled in by the investigator, which suits non-literate respondents. Construction: (1) clarify objectives and variables; (2) choose question types, open-ended or closed (dichotomous, multiple choice, ranking, Likert scale); (3) use simple, specific wording; avoid leading, double-barrelled, loaded and ambiguous questions; (4) order questions from general to specific (funnel), keeping sensitive items later; (5) keep it short with clear instructions and a covering letter; (6) pre-test, revise, then administer.
5 of 9 papers. Typical forms: types of sampling; probability vs non-probability with examples; considerations in choosing sample size; how sampling helps a researcher.
Basic terms. Population or universe (all units of interest), sampling unit, sampling frame (the list from which a sample is drawn), sample (the selected part) and sampling error (difference between sample and population values). Sampling saves time and cost and, done properly, gives accurate estimates.
Probability sampling gives every unit a known, non-zero chance of selection, so results can be generalised with a measurable margin of error:
Non-probability sampling does not give known chances; it suits exploratory and qualitative work:
Choosing sample size. It depends on heterogeneity of the population (more variation needs a larger sample), the precision and confidence level required, the number of sub-groups to be analysed, the type of analysis, expected non-response, and time, money and staff. A larger sample cuts sampling error but not non-sampling errors such as poor questions or interviewer bias.
5 of 9 papers. Typical forms: Comte's ideas on the nature of sociology; critical evaluation of positivist methodology; empirical approach; how common sense differs from science; how social sciences differ from natural sciences; influence of science and modernity on sociology.
Comte. Auguste Comte named sociology and wanted it to be a "positive" science of society. His law of three stages holds that human thought passes from the theological to the metaphysical to the positive (scientific) stage. He placed sociology at the top of a hierarchy of sciences and divided it into social statics (order) and social dynamics (progress). Sociology should use observation, experiment, comparison and the historical method.
Positivist methodology: tenets. (1) Unity of method: society can be studied like nature. (2) Only observable, measurable facts count as knowledge. (3) Objectivity and value-neutrality. (4) The aim is general, law-like explanation and prediction. Durkheim's Rules of Sociological Method (1895), with its rule to treat social facts as things, and his study of suicide applied these ideas.
Empirical approach. Empiricism (Locke, Hume) holds that knowledge comes from sense experience. In sociology the empirical approach means grounding claims in systematically collected evidence rather than speculation.
Critique. Interpretive sociologists (Weber's Verstehen, phenomenology) argue that human action carries meaning that measurement misses; facts are theory-laden; complete value-neutrality is impossible; prediction in society is weak because people react to knowledge about themselves (reflexivity); and critical theorists see positivism as serving the status quo.
Common sense vs science. Common sense is taken-for-granted, unsystematic, often contradictory ("birds of a feather flock together" vs "opposites attract"), local and untested. Science is systematic, explicit about method, verifiable, cumulative, open to criticism and self-correcting. Sociology often studies common-sense beliefs themselves and sometimes overturns them.
Social vs natural sciences. The subject matter is conscious, meaning-making and changing; controlled experiments are limited; the researcher is part of what is studied; values enter more openly; and generalisations are probabilistic rather than universal laws.
5 of 9 papers. Typical forms: what is phenomenology, critically discuss; phenomenological tradition in social sciences; Alfred Schutz's contribution; what is hermeneutics and how is it used in sociology; short note on hermeneutics.
Phenomenology. Founded as philosophy by Edmund Husserl, phenomenology studies how things appear in consciousness. It asks the researcher to "bracket" (suspend) assumptions about the external world and describe experience as it is lived, in the everyday lifeworld.
Alfred Schutz brought phenomenology into sociology in The Phenomenology of the Social World (1932), building on Weber's idea of meaningful action. His key ideas: (1) people understand the world through typifications, taken-for-granted types of persons and situations ("a postman", "a wedding"); (2) each person draws on a stock of knowledge at hand; (3) the social world is intersubjective, shared and assumed to be shared; (4) action has in-order-to motives (future goals) and because motives (past causes); (5) people live in multiple realities, with everyday life as the paramount reality. Schutz influenced Berger and Luckmann's Social Construction of Reality (1966) and Harold Garfinkel's ethnomethodology.
Critique. Phenomenology can neglect structure, power and inequality; its descriptions are hard to verify; and it may slide into subjectivism.
Hermeneutics. The theory and practice of interpretation, first of sacred texts and then of all human expression. Friedrich Schleiermacher and Wilhelm Dilthey argued that the human sciences need understanding (Verstehen), not just explanation. The hermeneutic circle says we understand parts through the whole and the whole through its parts. Hans-Georg Gadamer (Truth and Method, 1960) added that every interpreter brings prejudices or a "horizon", and understanding is a fusion of the researcher's and the subject's horizons. In sociology: Weber's interpretive sociology, Clifford Geertz's "thick description" (1973) of culture as a text, and the analysis of documents, narratives and media all use hermeneutic reasoning.
5 of 9 papers. Typical forms: define ethnography with an example; how it helps social research; Malinowski's contribution to ethnography and fieldwork; short note on ethnography.
Ethnography is the study of a people's way of life from within, through long-term fieldwork, participant observation, conversation and documentation. Its product is also called an ethnography, a written account of a culture. It aims at the "native's point of view" and at context: how practices fit together in everyday life.
Malinowski's contribution. Bronisław Malinowski's fieldwork in the Trobriand Islands, written up in Argonauts of the Western Pacific (1922), set the model of modern fieldwork:
How ethnography helps. It reveals meanings and informal practices, generates hypotheses, studies groups that surveys cannot reach, and checks whether official categories fit lived reality. In India, M. N. Srinivas's study of Rampura (The Remembered Village, 1976) is a classic example.
Critiques. Small, non-representative settings; the researcher's presence changes behaviour; subjectivity and difficulty of replication; and power in representation. The Writing Culture debate (Clifford and Marcus, 1986) questioned who has authority to describe others. Malinowski's private diary, published in 1967, also exposed the gap between his ideal of empathy and his actual attitudes.
5 of 9 papers. Typical forms: how the internet helps research; online data collection; role of ICT in presenting findings; how SPSS helps data analysis; short note on ICT in social science research.
At each stage of research:
SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) lets the researcher define variables, enter and clean data, and run descriptive statistics (frequencies, mean, median, standard deviation), cross-tabulations, tests such as chi-square and t-tests, correlation and regression, and produce tables and graphs. Its value is speed and accuracy; its risk is mechanical use without understanding which test fits the data.
Limits and ethics. The digital divide makes online samples unrepresentative of rural, poor and older people; identity of online respondents is hard to verify; privacy, consent and data security need care; and online data can be manipulated or come from bots.
5 of 9 papers, mostly as short notes. Case study method (three times), genealogical study (twice), life history approach (once, as a full question).
Case study. An intensive, holistic study of one unit (a person, family, village, organisation or event) in its real-life context, using several sources of evidence. Frédéric Le Play's family budget studies are often cited as an early example. Uses: depth, process and context; generating hypotheses. Limits: weak generalisation, selection and researcher bias. Robert Yin's work distinguishes single and multiple, and exploratory, descriptive and explanatory case studies.
Life history. A detailed account of a person's life, told largely in their own words and set against social and historical change. The classic is W. I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki's The Polish Peasant in Europe and America (1918–20), which used letters and a long autobiography. It shows how individuals experience migration, caste mobility or war; its limits are memory, selective recall and representativeness.
Genealogical method. Developed by W. H. R. Rivers (around 1910), it records a person's kin across generations with names, marriages, residence and status. It is the basic tool of kinship studies and also reveals marriage rules, inheritance, migration and demographic patterns.
4 of 9 papers, always as a full question: feminist perspective on research; essential features of the feminist method; feminist approach to social phenomena.
Core argument. Mainstream research was male-centred: it ignored women's lives, treated male experience as universal and claimed a false objectivity. Feminist methodology is less a single technique than a set of principles: (1) put women's experience and gender at the centre; (2) standpoint epistemology (Dorothy Smith, Nancy Hartsock, Sandra Harding): knowledge starting from the lives of the marginalised can be more complete, which Harding called "strong objectivity"; (3) reduce hierarchy between researcher and researched; Ann Oakley's 1981 essay on interviewing women argued against the detached, one-way interview; (4) reflexivity: the researcher states her own position; (5) research for women, linked to change. Methods are often qualitative (life histories, oral history, in-depth interviews), but feminists also use statistics to expose inequality. In India, Sharmila Rege argued for a Dalit feminist standpoint that brings caste into gender analysis.
3 of 9 papers. Observation as a method; participant vs non-participant; short note on participant observation.
Observation is the systematic watching and recording of behaviour in its natural setting. Participant observation: the researcher takes part in the group's life; Raymond Gold (1958) described four roles, from complete participant to participant-as-observer, observer-as-participant and complete observer. Non-participant observation: the researcher watches without joining. Observation can also be structured (checklists) or unstructured, and controlled (laboratory) or uncontrolled. Strengths: studies actual behaviour, not reported behaviour; captures non-verbal and contextual detail. Limits: observer effect (people change behaviour when watched, sometimes linked to the Hawthorne studies), observer bias, ethical issues in covert observation, and limited coverage.
3 of 9 papers. What is a hypothesis and how is it tested (full question); short note twice.
A hypothesis is a tentative, testable statement about the relation between two or more variables, for example "higher education reduces the practice of dowry". Characteristics: conceptually clear, specific, empirically testable, related to theory, and simple. Sources: theory, earlier research, observation, analogy and culture. Types: descriptive, relational and causal; the null hypothesis (no relation) and the alternative hypothesis. Testing: operationalise the variables into indicators → collect data from a suitable sample → apply a statistical test (chi-square, t-test, correlation) → decide whether to reject the null hypothesis at a significance level such as 0.05. Two errors are possible: rejecting a true null (Type I) and accepting a false null (Type II). A hypothesis is never "proved", only supported or rejected.
3 of 9 papers. Ethical issues in social science research; why ethical considerations matter; ethics in field-based research.
Principles: informed consent and voluntary participation; no harm (physical, psychological, social or legal); confidentiality and anonymity; avoiding deception, or justifying and debriefing when it is unavoidable; honesty in reporting, with no fabrication or plagiarism; respect for vulnerable groups (children, Dalit and Adivasi communities, survivors of violence); and returning findings to the community. Classic controversies: Stanley Milgram's obedience experiments (1960s), which caused distress, and Laud Humphreys' Tearoom Trade (1970), which used covert observation and traced participants. In the field: power gaps between researcher and researched, gatekeepers, political sensitivity and the researcher's own safety. Today ethics committees review research proposals.
3 of 9 papers. What is the comparative method; its nature and scope; historical method; historical vs evolutionary method.
Comparative method. Since experiments are rarely possible, sociologists compare societies, groups or periods to find what varies together. Durkheim called it the sociological substitute for experiment. John Stuart Mill's methods of agreement and difference give its logic. Weber's comparative study of world religions, asking why rational capitalism arose in the West, is the classic case. Problems: units may not be comparable, concepts may not travel across cultures, and there are few cases with many variables.
Historical method. It studies the past through primary sources (archives, records, letters) and secondary sources, testing them by external criticism (is the document genuine?) and internal criticism (is its content reliable?). It explains particular, documented sequences of change.
Historical vs evolutionary. The evolutionary method places all societies on one universal ladder of stages, often with little evidence. The historical method traces the specific, documented path of each society and accepts many paths.
3 of 9 papers. Relationship between mean, median and mode; types of correlation; meaning and use of central tendency; steps in data analysis.
Central tendency summarises data with one typical value. The mean is the arithmetic average (sensitive to extreme values); the median is the middle value (useful for skewed data such as income); the mode is the most frequent value (the only one usable for nominal data such as religion). In a symmetrical distribution all three are equal. In a moderately skewed distribution Karl Pearson's empirical relation applies: Mode ≈ 3 Median − 2 Mean.
Correlation measures how two variables move together: positive, negative or zero; linear or non-linear; simple, partial or multiple. Pearson's coefficient (r) is used for interval data and Spearman's rank coefficient for ranked data. Values run from −1 to +1. Correlation is not causation: a third variable may explain both.
Steps in data analysis: editing (checking completeness and consistency) → coding → classification and tabulation → descriptive analysis → inferential analysis and hypothesis testing → interpretation → presentation in tables and graphs.
3 of 9 papers. Popper's falsification (Jun 2022); paradigm shift and Descartes' rationalism (Dec 2022); idealism and Berkeley (Jun 2025).
3 of 9 papers combined. Triangulation (Jun 2022 full question, Dec 2022 note); cultural relativism vs ethnocentrism (Dec 2022 full question, Dec 2025 note).
Triangulation uses more than one approach to study the same question so that the weaknesses of one are offset by another. Norman Denzin (1970) named four types: data triangulation (different times, places, people), investigator triangulation (several researchers), theory triangulation (several theories) and methodological triangulation (for example survey plus ethnography). It increases validity and confidence, but results may conflict and it costs more.
Cultural relativism holds that a culture's practices should be understood in their own context and by their own standards, not judged by the observer's culture. Franz Boas made it central to anthropology. Ethnocentrism, a term popularised by W. G. Sumner (Folkways, 1906), is judging other cultures by one's own as the standard. Relativism is a methodological necessity for fieldwork, but taken as absolute moral relativism it cannot criticise practices such as untouchability or sati, so most scholars use it as method, not ethics.
